Stretch Your Stock Photo Dollar

Making the most of Discounts and Free Trials to make your dollar go further

Assuming you've already checked out our listings of completely free stock photo sites.... and realise that 'nothing is quite free'.

Make the Most of Creative Commons:

The quality of most creative commons images is way better than the usual 'rubbish' you often find on free sites; there's a good reason for that, photographers and illustrators are promoting their paid work using creative commons - so the catch is that you need to attribute the source whenever you use them, sometimes they are not available for commercial use. Clearly Creative Commons is not practical for something like a business card design, but on a blog or somewhere that's in need of a simple basic photo there is often a Creative Commons image that's easy to find and use. You won't be able to replace all your image needs, but they'll leave more budget for 'feature images'.

Free Trial Subscriptions:

Make the most of low priced stock sites that offer freebies as sign-up incentives. Here's a couple: (Please note these offers are sometimes withdrawn without notice, apologies if that's the case, and drop us a message)

Depositphotos - 7 day trial subscription with 5 images per day.

Microstock:

You already knew that microstock agencies offer the best value and some of the widest choice of images in the stock image industry yes? The quality excellent of not exactly 'inspired' with creativity...

Compare Prices: As many photographers upload their images to more than one agency then it's wise to look for images on the cheaper agencies first. In our microstock site review we found depositphotos to be the cheapest microstock site with a good image collection size (may vary depending on your circumstances)

Subscriptions: If you are buying several high resolution images always check to see if a short subscription would be cheaper, the catch being you must make sure you cancel if once you have downloaded what you need - the agencies bank on people forgetting and leaving a subscription on-running for 'convenience'

Twitter:

Even if you don't use twitter, we have compiled a page of the latest tweets from some people who post updates for stock photo users
